I received a request from CBC Radio to remove the wiretap episodes. My fingers were crossed that they would make the episodes available in some form on the Wiretap website before sending a take down request. Unfortunately that isn’t the case. They still need to work out rights issues. Note, they do have a Real Audio stream of an episode on the site, however, I believe the same episode has been there a while. So I don’t think they are posting new episodes after they air.
If you want to catch the show you’ll have to tune in via the radio or live Internet stream.

Comment by Alnis 08.05.06 @ 2:59 amThanks for posting the FREE broadcasts and not asking for anything in return. Canadian taxpayers pay for the initial writing, actor performances, and the broadcast. Other CBC shows that contain creative writing, and original songs by artists such as the CBCradio3 Podcast… are downloadable for free. Each song from each Band consits of several musicians, writer and co-writers and the Record Label yet somehow everyweek an hours worth of a diverse group of individuals can agree that a free podcast is good for them and yet the SOLE writer of Wiretap needs to be treated special? The only scenario that i can see is that the writer wants more money. if this is the case then maybe it’s time to move on to a different station or pursue another opportunity IMO.
Comment by scott 08.05.06 @ 3:13 pmI saw somebody with a Wiretap shirt quoting the Samson & Delilah episode, which absolutely blew my mind. Imagine my surprise when I try to find the MP3, and stumble onto this site, only to find out the links were taken down yesterday! If anybody could send the MP3 to rickypenner@hotmail.com, it’d be much appreciated!
Comment by rp 08.05.06 @ 7:42 pmHi,
I love wiretap.
Is it still possible to get the mp3s off this site?
I keep getting the name and pword pop-up.
Also, I don’t get the “Subscribe” RSS feed thing.
Thanks.

Hey!!
Sorry to hear about this, and thank you so much for keeping all of us happy for so long!! Wiretap rules.
Thanks again,

Comment by tom 08.06.06 @ 4:52 pmThank you for keeping this up. I am particularly interested in the episode where Gregor and Jonathan have a contest about who had the craziest mother. I think it aired on July 16 (it was a rerun). Does anyone know the name of that episode?
Thank you for putting these episodes up. It’s been a lifeline. My daughter’s been travelling Africa and she says of all the things on her iPOD - Wiretap is her favourite. Thank you!!
Comment by Marcina 08.06.06 @ 7:12 pmHi Jared,
I’m sorry to hear. Can you tell me how you recorded the episodes? I’d like to try recording episodes that come up on the radio for my own personal archive.
Comment by Vlad Levin 08.07.06 @ 1:15 pmI’m so sad to hear you can’t get the episodes here anymore.
I often miss the live broadcasts, but LOVE the show.
Lets hope the CBC works out the rights issues and we will be able to download off of their website soon.
Comment by J 08.08.06 @ 12:56 amthanks for your work Jared–I really looked forward to my weekly fix
Comment by Andrew 08.08.06 @ 1:26 pmThanks for keeping this up while it lasted… it’s a great show and having the mp3’s here were really handy.
Comment by Shari 08.08.06 @ 1:28 pmI live and work in Toronto… unfortunately I never get time to the show on air / CBC. I’m dissapointed but also understand their concerns. I wish they would Podcast this show themselves. Thanks Jared from everyone for keeping the archive for at least a short time.
Comment by Jordan 08.08.06 @ 7:58 pmThanks for hosting, this is too bad - wiretap podcasts have really helped keep my sanity in tact in the past, not to mention help spread the love. Marcina- The episode you’re thinking of is called “One of a Kind” and I wish I had recorded it because it was amazing.
Comment by Andrew 08.09.06 @ 4:29 pmIn response to a comment made by Scott.
When I spoke with Jonathan Goldstein a couple of months ago, I specifically mentioned this site, and he told me that he thought it was great. He told me (as mentioned earlier) that they were still trying to get the music licensing sorted out before they could release anything online.
So please don’t accuse the writer of this show for the lack of archives. I suppose the only thing he can be blamed for is finding music that isn’t just found within the CBC library (he goes through about an hour of music - actually importing it into the session and listening to it with the dialogue - for every ten or so minutes of the show).
Sure, it’s a pain for all of us not to be able to listen to it at our leisure, but I would rather that than potentially lower the quality of the show by not allowing the creator to use the music he would like.
Comment by John 08.11.06 @ 11:49 pmI loved this site — thanks for allowing me to listen late-night at my convenience. It’s a real shame for all of us that you can’t continue.
As fans, we should also be sending our comments to CBC Customer Relations.
Comment by Greer Johnston 08.13.06 @ 11:14 amthanks for doing this for so long…re: podcasting, the problem (as mentioned above) is music licensing: the canadian versions of the music licensing agencies have not granted podcast rights to anyone. not CBC’s fault; and the laws are different in other countries. it’s all a little up in the air right now, but many cbc shows that are podcasts have the music stripped out before they are put online - so they don’t run into this problem. music is such an integral part of wiretap, that this would be difficult.
but thanks again, and lets hope wiretap gets back online soon.
also, here is the link to the cbc feedback page:

Comment by hugh 08.13.06 @ 2:11 pmI loved this site. I would laugh out loud for hours, sometimes listening to the same episode over and over. I can’t believe it’s gone. Thanks for offering it. I’m very disappointed in the CBC at the moment… I am particularily going to miss Goody Two Shoes. If anyone has that in their collection could you please email it to me, jsims@ns.sympatico.ca . I would really appreciate it, just remembering it makes me laugh!
Thanks and thanks…
Had anybody downloaded the most recent shows that were posted on this site before it was shut down? I have a bunch of the older ones, so if anyone wants to share files I’m up for it. I’ll come up with a list of the ones I have later.
Comment by Allyson 08.15.06 @ 10:22 amok johnathan i understand now… i take it back.. I understand..
Why not hook up with the Guild of Canadian Film Composers and get hooked up with some fresh talent … and get original Wiretap music? help out another canadian?
Talk to Don MacKellar.. he is very knowledgeable about that sort of thing with songs vrs original music.
Also… most people believe the show production will go down by not being able to use the music they want initially, most producers find that using original music by canadian composers actually makes the show better and clears up licencing problems as well… talk to the producers of Dawsons Creek.
Sorry… for the accusatory comments… I am not a republican or a canadian conservative…. a lowley frustrated editor…
Comment by scott 08.15.06 @ 4:20 pmHey Allyson,
I might have some of the newer ones, please email me… jsims@ns.sympatico.ca … we should compare our lists…
Comment by Julie 08.15.06 @ 4:30 pmAllyson,
I’m also interested in trading newer for older.
i was just chatting with someone who knows someone who … works on the show and apparently they are looking at ways (eg getting rid of licensed music and putting in CC music etc) of getting some old shows available as mp3s … presumeably they are planning the same thing for future shows. potentially good news.
Comment by hugh 08.16.06 @ 3:54 pmEWE ! i guess you are talking bout DeWolfe, or FiveAlarm Music… I tell ya…. even a half talented kid with Soundtrack Pro / Logic Audio and an synth could create wonders…
Comment by scott 08.17.06 @ 10:15 amI am sad to see that this site has been shut down. It was a pleasure listening to the show, but I have only heard about 60% of them. Would anyone who has the collection consider posting a torrent?

Thanks for the keeping the links up for so long. I used you site quite often to go back and listen to some of my favourite episodes several time. I hope CBC gets their butts in gear, but I’m not hopeful as it took them a very long time to even get a few of their shows up as podcasts. It does seem strange that a public broadcaster is so reticent to provide their shows in a medium which is so convenient for those of us with schedules that don’t quite match up with theirs.
Thanks again for keeping them up for so long

Comment by NicolasPadilla 09.01.06 @ 1:53 amI have all the episodes that were on this site, so if someone wants to download it via bittorrent, I would be willing to provide any or all of the episodes I have. I was a bit hesitant to do so at first, until I learned here that Goldstein was okay with it.
Anyway, send an email to my hotmail account, daniel_grant, with something obvious in the subject line (like ‘Wiretap Wiretap Wiretap’).

I emailed CBC about Wiretap becoming a podcast, and it seems like they are working on it, so hopefully it will happen sooner than later. Until then, we’ll just make our own.

A couple of things, seeing as this is being used as a general Wiretap message board:
(1) Jeremy, how are you making the nice, high quality captures? The highest quality stream I can find is @ 32kbps, whereas yours seems to be 56kbps (unless you are just upconverting).
(2) http://www.supernintendochalmers.net/wiretap/
(3) Read the “read me” file there for the third thing…
Hmmm… my comment I wrote yesterday never showed up.
To answer your question, Chalmers, I’ve been downloading CBC’s Ogg Vorbis stream (http://cbc.ca/listen/ogg.html). It’s a 24 kbps stream at 22 kHz. I put it into Audacity to edit the start and finish, and convert it to MP3.
Since Ogg Vorbis supposedly outperforms MP3 at low bitrates, and to reduce the inevitable information loss in converting from one lossy compression format to another, I chose 56 kbps for the MP3. This might be more than is necessary; I actually just picked the number because Jared was encoding at 56 kbps.
Comment by jeremy 10.25.06 @ 12:45 amdoes anyone know where “One of a Kind” is?
Its the one where Gregor and Jonathan are arguing over whose mother scarred them worse.
I’ve uploaded a few of the shows I recorded that did not seem to be in the latest archive. They are:
Confessions
The First Thing That Comes to Mind
One of a Kind
Positive Thinking
Vacation
The quality is not the greatest (32 kbps feed) but enjoy!
They can be download at: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=XQEG5J8H
Comment by John 10.27.06 @ 8:09 amJohn,
thank-you!
Thanks also to everyone who continues to fight ‘the Man’ by keeping wiretap online.
Thanks John! I’ve uploaded them to the archive. I’m not sure about some of the dates of the broadcast, but I’ve left them as you had them.
On the one hand, I’m hoping to keep it small/underground to avoid the watchful eye of the CBC, but on the other hand, I want more people to be able to listen to it… What a conundrum. I wish they’d hurry up and release an official podcast!
I’m not sure about the dates either. They were what I found searching the Hotsheets at CBC so take them as just a guideline.
Comment by John 10.27.06 @ 10:00 amOh, and the untitled episode in the archive is called What I’ve Learned.
Comment by John 10.28.06 @ 7:27 amJohn,
Just curious, were you recording these yourself, or did you already have them?
In any case, thanks. I’m always excited for a few new episodes!
BTW, I had “Confessions” and “Vacation”, but with earlier air dates. These were the first episodes Jared posted, although yours seem to be different recordings. (Jared’s had some extra stuff at the beginning, and one was missing a few secs at the end.) http://redjar.org/jared/blog/archives/2005/04/20/wiretap/)
Comment by jeremy 10.28.06 @ 10:22 amJeremy,
I too saw that they were posted by Jared but I was asked for a password to download them again. Anyways, they weren’t on yet so I included them. I recorded these five (and perhaps seven others that Chalmers already had) myselfin 2005. I actually stopped recording them myself when I discovered Jared’s site and could just get them sent to my iTunes as podcasts. However, when I noticed that I had some that were not in the archive, I uploaded them.
I encourage everybody who finds this page to post any old episodes they have recorded here, or send them to Chalmers, so that one complete archive can be assembled.
J
Comment by John 10.29.06 @ 4:45 amThanks very much for all of the assistance with expanding the database of shows. I have taken all of the shows from the redjar archives as well as those submitted by John, Jeremy and others and uploaded them to the database. I also spent a few hours yesterday trimming down some of the older shows I had with extraneous minutes before and after. Some things I’ve done, but would appreciate outside input on:
(1) Because the CBC Radio streams are published at 32kbps, and all of these (I’m assuming) are recorded from the same, I have left them in 32kbps quality. We’re not going to gain any quality by expanding them, and I do believe 32kpbs is pretty universally playable by mp3 players. A few of the newer ones to me are still in another format, but I am hesitant to convert them, risking further quality degradation. Comments? Should I convert them all over, or leave them as is?
(2) As for the mp3 files themselves, the nomenclature I’ve chosen is “Wiretap - YYYYMMDD - Title.mp3″, and have filled in the tags as follows:
-Artist as “WireTap with Jonathan Goldstein”
-Album as “WireTap” (please notice the capitalized “T” which I was previously missing, but is correct according to the official website)
-Track Number: blank (in order to be downloaded properly with iTunes, my podcatcher of choice)
-Comment: Date in “YYYYMMDD” format
-Genre: Podcast
Are these good settings? I’m hoping that if people don’t like the naming convention, they can use an mp3 tag editor/renamer to change it easily.
(3) How should we deal with repeat broadcasts? For instance, today’s show, October 29, 2006, is a repeat of the April 14, 2006 show “Samson and Delilah”. For now, I have created a new show with the updated broadcast information, so people don’t think the podcast feed is broken.
(4) Would people want another round of BitTorrent seeding to happen? I can create another one and seed for a while, to help folks get the database.
Anyone with any opinions (positive or negative) is asked to drop me a line, or comment here, as I’d love to hear some other opinions. Thanks!
Comment by Chalmers (chalmers2006@gmail.com) 10.29.06 @ 1:32 pmChalmers,
(1) If the new ones you speak of are .m4b files (M4A/MP4/AAC), I’d convert them to MP3 as an alternative, and offer both. People with non-Apple MP3 players would probably appreciate it. As for quality loss, when you’re dealing with relatively low-quality sources, I think the deterioration of re-encoding is pretty neglible.
(2) Your naming convention is fine. As you say, people can change it to suit their own tastes. Interesting that the show is apparently “WireTap.” I prefer the other spelling.
(3) For repeats, I would chose not to update the podcast feed. But, since you are doing that, you could point to the original MP3. That way, if the file has already been downloaded, an intelligent podcatcher could avoid downloading another copy. (I’m not sure which podcatchers would notice this, but I think they should.)
(4) A torrent would be good. I had been thinking of doing so myself, but I’m glad you’re taking the initiative!
Comment by jeremy 10.30.06 @ 1:56 amAddenum to (2):
Under ID3v1, the artist name shows up as “WireTap with Jonathan Goldstei”. To fit JG’s full name, you could abbreviate “with” (e.g., “w/”).
Comment by jeremy 10.30.06 @ 2:39 amThanks for the great suggestions, Jeremy.
(1) I was speaking only of the mp3 file format, and just keeping the data rate the same as what it is “broadcast” in. In order for things to be a little more consistent, I’ve converted the 2 large (33MB) files down to 32kbps (20050122 - Canadian Content and 20050129 - Let’s Pretend).
(2) I too prefer the lower-case “t” in WireTap, but it’s only fair that I stay with the naming convention that CBC and/or JG came up with.
I do like your suggestion for “w/” in the ID3v1 tags, and will try and remember to do that from now on. It seems a bit of a waste of resources (ie, my time and for people who have already grabbed them) to change all of the ones currently in the archive, though.
(3) I like your second suggestion of still updating the feed, but just pointing to the original file. In my description of the enclosed file, I’ll just indicate why there’s a repeat. That way pocast listeners get the same experience as radio listeners (for better or worse).
(4) OK, I’ve done it. And now I promise I won’t goof around with any of the files in the archive (ID3 tags, name and date changes), except to add new ones as they come along (both new and old). http://www.mininova.org/tor/471682
Hi Chalmers,
I have an episode called first impressions I downloaded from jared’s site. Where should I put it up for you to include in the archive? I also have the jonathan goldstein interview if you want it.
Thanks for posting these files! I hope the cbc makes an official podcast soon!
Comment by Vladimir Levin 11.03.06 @ 11:36 amhey thanks to Chalmers for posting those shows! I don’t always get to catch them on Fridays. Are they playing old episodes again or has my luck run out?
Cheers!
Hi Chris, It looks like they are doing a combo of new and old episodes these days. I’m archiving all the new ones (and additions that people are sending me) in the directory I posted above.
Speaking of which, I missed this past show because I’m on vacation without my laptop… Can anyone tell me if it was a new episode, or a repeat? I’ll be home in time for the replay on Friday evening, so the podcast will be updated late this week. If I was smart, which I’m not, I would have asked someone else to take over for the week. Whoops. ![]()
I missed it as well. Next time, let me know, and I’ll record it if you’re unable.
The episode description, From the weekend hotsheet (http://groups.google.com/group/alt.tv.networks.cbc/msg/e9bdfd1d1c237005)
WIRETAP: ***also heard Friday at 8:30 p.m. (9 NT) on CBC Radio
One***
This week on WireTap, Jonathan tampers with some EQ knobs in the studio
to make his radio voice 30% sexier. But is a deeper sound really
enough to compensate for his stuttering delivery? Gregor still hears
the same old Jon. More important…what will his parents think? That’s
WireTap, with Jonathan Goldstein, Sunday afternoon at 1:00 (1:30 NT, 4:
PT) on CBC Radio One.
Thanks for the offer Jeremy, I’ll be sure to take you up on it in the future. I had every intention of being able to grab it, but something came up. And I just got home from the vacation, and see that my backup/fail-safe also didn’t take.
So I will be recording it Friday evening. Sorry to everyone who relies on the podcast!
Damn! I finally find someone with an archive of old Wiretap and it’s already taken down. Like everyone else, can someone send me the MP3 of past shows.

cheers.
Very much appreciated chalmers, totally awesome. I really dig the show and also the effort you put in for those of us who can’t catch it all the time! Solid gold is right!
Comment by Chris 01.11.07 @ 4:19 pmI hope you guys can forgive me: I missed today’s recording… Unless someone else has a copy, the archive/podcast will have to wait until Friday. Sorry! Any ideas as to what I should do about the feed? Should I write up a tiny .txt file warning subscribers of the delay, or just release it late?
Comment by Chalmers (chalmers2006@gmail.com) 01.14.07 @ 8:28 pmI think you can just release it late chalmers. Thanks again for all the work you do. By the way, if in future you know that you’ll be missing an episode you can let me know and I’ll record it.

Comment by Maayan 02.18.07 @ 10:59 pmI’ve contacted CBC several times in the past asking that Wiretap and other CBC shows like “Brave New Waves” and Brent Banbury’s “Go” be made available in MP3 format (or in streaming “listen again” format as the BBC site makes available). They always cite copyright and artist issues as being a problem. It is frustrating that if you miss an initial broadcast you can’t hear the show again at a later time. And it is really too bad that people like you are told to remove your archive of past shows - the archive is a genuine treasure. Anyhow, thanks for your initiative - I wish the CBC would have similar initiative.
